I could talk about it for days. I've been using coconut oil for about 7 years on a daily basis. I learned about all the uses for it from a holistic health counselor. She taught me about it's stability when cooking and how it's healthy saturated fat actually helps burn fat! She was making her clients take a tablespoon per day of it. That was a crazy thought to me! Eating straight fat like that? I also started lathering it on my pregnant belly and wow, that was amazing. So...I was hooked on it.
Coconut oil typically comes in a jar and is hard in cold temperatures and melts in warm temps. Just scooping it in your hand and rubbing your hands will melt the oil and it's ready to apply. Coconut oil is naturally antibacterial and anti viral. It is moisturizing, it smells amazing, it tastes amazing...need I say more? I buy my coconut oil in a very large container at Costco now and refill my small jars that are in my bathroom and my kitchen! My husband loves that I use the same stuff I put all over my body in his eggs ;)
You can also buy coconut oil at Trader Joe's, Schnucks, Aldi and even Walmart has large selection. You can buy a jar for about $5.99....and trust me...you will be back for more!
Some things I love so much that I just have to share. I thought it would be fun to share my top 10 favorite health and fitness products...well at least most of them. I'll be counting them down, in really no particular order because I don't think I could live without any of them. I'll let you know why I love it, where you can get it, how to use it...etc!

#9 Advocare Spark!

I first had a Spark about 2 years ago when my mom signed on to the 24 day challenge with Advocare. She had me taste the Spark energy drink and I was like...."Wow, that's yummy!" Only I was thinking..."Yeah, I wonder what's in this?" The flavors are all amazing and they have lots of vitamins, amino acids, and only 15 calories! Now it is kind of sweet and although it is sugar free, it still has sucralose which basically is Splenda and I'm not really a fan of Splenda, but all that aside I will tell you why I love it! It IS NOT DIET SODA!! And for me, that's a big seller. I'm that person who has the mid afternoon crash and who at dinner time would normally want to reach for a diet pepsi and a little snack. Instead, I have an afternoon Spark each day and NO SNACK! Spark does also contain caffeine, so if you don't want the caffeine I wouldn't suggest it. I drink a bit too much of it, I will admit between my coffee and Spark, but I have quit soda all together, so I'm thankful to Spark for that!

Spark comes in 7 flavors. Fruit Punch, Green Apple, Mandarin Orange, Strawberry Mango, Pink Lemonade, Watermelon, and Grape. Seriously, several of them remind you of a jolly rancher! My favs are Fruit Punch and Green Apple!

Now you may also be wondering what Advocare is? Advocare is a health and wellness company offering energy, weight loss, and sports nutrition products. They are a multi level marketing company that stands behind their products and they have many professional athletes who also do! They are very popular for their 24 day challenge which I have never myself done, but I do like a few of the products. I have purchased retail for a long time until it just made sense to join as a distributor. I only joined for the discount as I have too many other business ventures to promote Advocare as a business, but if you are interested in products you can visit my page and purchase through it still.

https://www.advocare.com/160226754/default.aspx
If you have real questions relating to products, the 24 day challenge or anything Advocare business related I would suggest you talk to Kristen Gartland who got me started using the products and who an expert on Advocare! I'm sure you can already guess what some of my favorite things are, the things I use EVERY day because I am a creature of habit. Some things I love so much that I just have to share. I thought it would be fun to share my top 10 favorite health and fitness products...well at least most of them.

#10 Pandora Radio!

I'm sure you have the app on your phone or listen to Pandora at work. It's one of my favorite things because I use it DAILY for my fitness classes and personal workouts! I've been instructing for 15 years now and let me tell you what a difference Pandora has made in my classes! Back in the day it was CD's. You had to constantly buy new workout CD's that were expensive or cheesy and carry them around and rotate them. Then we got ipods and had to constantly buy new songs at $.99 and make new playlists and you thought you'd puke if you heard that playlist again!
Pandora has made no two classes of mine the same! It goes on for hours and if you find the right channel you could workout for hours (Ok, not really), but it helps right? So what are my favorite fitness/workout channels? Grab your phone. Open your app. Enter these now!

80's Cardio Radio (if you want to take it back to the old aerobics days)

Dance Cardio Radio (pop, funky, upbeat)

Classic Rock Power Workout Radio (the men in my classes love this one)

Pop Fitness Radio (all the latest, if you want to feel young :)

80's Hip Hop Radio (taking me back to the DARE dances!)

Country Fitness Radio (I don't so much use this in classes, but if you like Country)

Hip Hop BBQ Radio (Always a favorite with the 30 somethings! Love me some Hip Hop)

Pop and Hip Hop Power Workout Radio (a little mix of old and new)

90's Hip Hop Radio (My ALL Time FAVORITE for personal workouts!)

Salt-N-Pepa Radio (MY NEW FAV!! Yes, I still know every word of "None of your Buisness" and I will sing it out loud! Seriously ladies...you're welcome!)

I know...you want to go workout right now don't you??

Oh, I forgot to mention I upgraded to Pandora ONE--- ZERO commercials! Only $4.99 per month and extremely worth it for me. If you won't use it that often, maybe you don't want to pay that, but my classes keep everyone singing, laughing and ROCKING their workouts!!

What are your favorite channels? Share them with me!
After all they are trending right now, so people assume they are just a fad or a sales scheme for a product that doesn't really work. Yes, I have been involved with some of these things before where I really want them to work (especially diets, wraps, anti-aging products), but the reality was....they just didn't work for me and I couldn't promote a product that didn't give me results!

I was never skeptical of essential oils, however, because I've been on this health journey a very long time and fortunately for me my journey took a turn when I started working with a holistic health counselor at a premier club I was working at where our approach to health and fitness was "whole life". I started learning about healthy eating instead of the latest diets and I learned so much about alternative treatments for health, illness and ailments. Essential oils have been around for thousand of years! They aren't something new and they are just for hippies :)- If you know me, you already know about my obsession with coconut oil, so you will sort of understand my recent obsession with the essential oils!

I am not an "organic" mom by any means. I love the idea of it, but lets face it, it's hard and expensive! My kids do eat junk...a lot more of it than I like to admit and I'm lucky if I get them to eat a few veggies and fruits a day. It's not easy. But....we do take vitamins, we try not to take medicine, I keep them very active and limit screen time and we use essentials oils on a DAILY basis.

I use and share doTERRA essential oils because they are therapeutic grade! That means they are 100% pure and can be used internally, aromatically, and topically. Not all essential oils are created equal and if you buy oils from a health food store (yes, we like to think a health food store is quality) majority of them cannot be ingested because they are made from synthetic materials or have only a small % of the actual oil in it and the rest is carrier oil. If you are going to use essential oils, only go therapeutic grade!

On a daily basis we use a preventive blend on our feet and in our diffuser to kill virus and bacteria, we use them in our water to flavor and detox, we use them on bumps, bruises, headaches, burns, sore muscles, and we use them to sleep at night. Really anything that comes up, my answer is, "I have an oil for that!" It is really nice to know that I have these little drops of goodness to reach for instead of meds and harmful chemicals.
Most of them accepted the challenge with enthusiasm! A cleanse or detox doesn't mean you can't eat for days, it can simply mean that you eliminate things from your diet. Eliminating caffeine, sugar, carbs and alcohol is a really good start. Most of us chose to do a fruit and veggie cleanse meaning we just ate all fruits and vegetables for a few days. I love this one because there is enough variety and I can still eat until I'm full. The hard part for me is always the coffee! I had a very bad headache the first day and hit a wall in the afternoon. Cleansing gives your digestive system a break, but also helps your body really break those cravings...hence the word DETOX!
After 4 days I feel really good and I am slowly adding back protein and a few other things to my diet. Here is what a typical day looked like on my fruit and veggie cleanse.

Breakfast:
Master Cleanse drink (32 oz water, juice of 1 lemon, 2 tbsp grade b maple syrup, dash of cayenne pepper)
Green Smoothie (banana, strawberries, blueberries, spinach, orange juice)

Lunch:
Spinach Salad with mandarin oranges, dried cranberries, avocado, olive oil, red wine vinigar

Snack: apple and cutie

Dinner:
Sauteed yellow, orange, and red peppers and kale

I all of these foods so that was easy! What isn't so easy is not popping stuff into your mouth that you don't even realize you normally do! If you are a mom, you probably snack while you make lunches or dinner. I had to feed my family what they like, but not eat it. And coffee....oh coffee....how I love my morning coffee. I drank Yogi Detox Tea instead, which is pretty good and soothes my desire for something hot in my mug in the morning, but I can't wait to have a cup of black coffee...and I WILL tomorrow. A little caffeine isn't bad, but it's good to break that addiction now and then!
I am so excited about this! Beginning in March, Go Fit Mom will hold it's first ever 60-Day Wellness Bootcamp! Since baby, I've been very limited in how many sessions I can do and I've been getting interest in training and nutrition advice, sooooo I thought this would be the perfect way to coach you through your journey no matter where you live or what your schedule is like!

People did things for us that I would never had imagined! Even complete strangers wrote messages to us and prayed for us daily. I realized that during a time like this people just want to help in any way. Sometimes they don't know how they can help, but they just want to feel like they contributed something. Many people say, "If you need anything, please let us know". We all have been there, it's hard to accept or reach out for help, but it's also hard to know how you can help someone during a difficult time. I have compiled a list of some of the amazing acts of kindness and ways you can help a NICU family during their time of need, or even things you can do for any new mother. Sometimes lending a helping hand can mean more than a gift and will be greatly appreciated. Especially when the family has other children at home. Here are some ideas....

1. Drop off some grocery necessities....milk, eggs, bread, pasta, peanut butter, frozen pizzas, soda, etc. Things you think the family uses and especially when they are short on time.

2. Make up a hospital care package....magazines, instant coffees, tea, snack bars, nuts, crayons and color books (for kids), goldfish crackers, etc. Families spend a lot of time in the cafeteria for snacks and meals and have a lot of downtime. This makes for less of those trips!

3. Make up some frozen meals. Time for Dinner www.timefordinner.com is a nice local (St. Louis) business where you can make yummy meals to freeze. Or you can just make your own. These come in handy now or later for the family! Our friends emailed out a calendar on www.signupgenius.com for friends and family to sign up to bring us meals. So greatly appreciated during our NICU stay!

4. Offer to send over a cleaning lady or service. We are both so fortunate that our mothers happen to do this for a living, but I can't say how nice it was to come home to a sparkling clean and sanitized house with our baby. Yard maintenance is another great idea if it's summer. Especially when the family is so short on time!

5. Sign the family or baby up for masses. Especially if the baby is sick and needs the prayers. We had several people enroll our baby in a Membership of Adoration that would dedicate 9 masses to her over the course of a year. A very thoughtful and meaningful gift. You may also add the family or baby to the prayer chain at your church or start a perpetual rosary...another amazing gesture that was started for our baby!

6. Plan a day to take the other children to do something fun and let the parents spend alone time or spend time at the hospital. This also does so much for the siblings who are going through a rough time and need the extra attention.

7. Send the family stationary, thank you cards, or stamps! With a new baby or a NICU stay the family has many thank you notes to write and this eliminates a few stops for them. A great gift idea!

8. Deliver a hot meal or have a meal delivered from a restaurant. Arrange the date ahead of time so the family knows. How nice it is to come home from a long day and have a hot meal delivered to your door!

9. Give a baby care package with diapers, wipes, and other baby care items that can be used later at home. You can never have enough diapers! Of course gift cards for these things are handy too.

10. Give the parents a nice journal, daily devotional, or other easy reading material. It is nice to have somewhere to keep thoughts or log of what's happening day to day and other meaningful but easy reading materials that can be picked up and read at any time and keep your thoughts positive.

11. Gather a few people to pay a month of tuition for the family, buy them a gas card, or help them financially in another way. Not only do medical bills start piling up, but when a parent is unable to work and has gas and food expenses that they wouldn't normally have, money gets tight! We were fortunate in that a good friend is involved with a foundation www.maggiewelby.org that helps with education expenses when families go through medical issues or hardships. What a burden lifted!

These are just some of the generous gifts and gestures we received during our difficult time that really made a difference! We were overwhelmed with the generosity of others and are ever so grateful. Sometimes you want to help someone, but you just don't know how. I hope this will give you some ideas if you should ever need them! I have been pumping now for 4 months all in hopes of eventually breastfeeding once Adison got home from the hospital. I never was a good pumper. With my other babies I breastfed exclusively until I had to go back to work and when I did the pump just didn't cut it. I dried up like that. I always felt I did a pretty good job giving them a good start. We lasted about 3-4 months and I had no problem switching to formula. This time is much harder!

At first with her being only 2lbs and in the NICU I felt it was my duty to supply her what she needed. I rented a hospital grade pump which has been $60 a month for the last 3 months. I felt this was the only thing I could do for her, so keeping up with pumping every 3 hours was hard, but sooo worth it to me. I've been telling myself that if we can make it through the NICU stay then when she gets home we can really breastfeed. I was looking forward to this because number one I think it's the healthiest for mom and baby, two... I love the bonding, three...it's free...how can you beat that? and four... I love the ease of it! Middle of the night feedings are so easy when you just have to bring the baby to your bed and whip it out. No warming bottles and cleaning them....it's the easiest and most natural way. Don't think I'm some crazy pro-breastfeeding mom who doesn't think it's okay to feed formula. I think whatever works for you is what you should do. I just happen to like breastfeeding for me! So, I've been through 2 rounds of prescription Reglan to keep up my supply when its fallen off. I've tried the pumping every two hour thing and I've drank so much water I'm about to drown. I just can't keep it up. Since she has been home I've tried getting her to breastfeed. She does okay, but she's not great with feeding from the bottle as it is, so the let down of the breast drowns her. She latches great, but she gets fussy with me because there isn't much there and then she gets too much. It's been a rough road, but I didn't want to give up so easily! I just finished the Reglan again two days ago and the very next day already my supply dropped drastically. I think its time to stop, I just feel so guilty!

In one way, I think if I stop it will take some stress off of me. I've been a crazy lady trying to mix bottles, feed her, and pump. It takes me an hour at night to go through the whole routine and I'm hurting for some sleep! Maybe I use this time to sleep and actually be happier during the day. I can also get rid of the pump and the $60 a month, which will probably be the same as formula. I just hate to lose out on the bonding time that we didn't get while she was in the hospital! For 3 months I only got to see my baby for an hour or two a day. I had to ask nurses if I could feed her. I just wanted this time at home with her to nurse her when I wanted and feel the bond I felt with my other girls. I know I need to get over this feeling and I will feel so much relief after I get over the guilt.
I spoke with my doctor today and told him I just can't keep up. He reminded me of how hard it is to pump for such a long time and how well I have done. He reassured me that I have given her the best during the time it really mattered. She has gotten a great start with breastmilk those first 4 months and there is no harm in switching. My husband also made me feel better about it and has supported my decision. I really don't have much of a decision to make...my body has pretty much made it for me. I'm sure there are other moms who have been through too. It's just part of being a mother with expectations. I just need to channel my guilt into something else. I hope we can bond through cuddling and bottle feeding. This has been such a long hard 4 months. I'm looking forward to getting rid of the stress of feeding and start enjoying other things about my baby girl.Joyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15292838755874547845noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4291128828961325555.post-1724391821632060702013-02-07T12:04:00.001-08:002013-02-13T07:26:03.180-08:00101 things I learned from having a PreemieI am creating this post for a premature baby awareness site. I am naming this post "Surviving the NICU" because that's exactly what we did....we SURVIVED. I can't call it much else. We didn't enjoy it, we didn't feel we belonged there, we didn't want to be there, we felt several times were weren't going to make it through, but we did! We finally have our baby girl home after 108 days in the NICU. I explained her birth story in an earlier post if you didn't get the background. I can't explain everything that we went through while we were there, but I was also keeping a journal on caringbridge.com for that. It was nice to have a way to update friends and family when the last thing you wanted to do was explain what was happening each day over and over. We have been overwhelmed by the support of our friends, family, school community, and perfect strangers. At times we didn't know what to say. It's really hard to accept so much help. You have to learn to say "yes" and "thank you". We heard time and time again how strong we were. "You are the strongest mother", "you guys are so strong, you will get through this". I read recently that sometimes the strongest people are actually the most sensitive. I believe this statement 100%. I never felt strong. Ask my husband, I am one of the most sensitive people around, especially when it comes to parenting! I just can't show it. You don't want to look like the poor sad mother, or the depressed mom who has the sick baby in the NICU. You can't cry all the time, so you have no choice but to appear strong! Trust me, you have your days. Days where you just want to complain to everyone you see about how tired you are of going back and forth to the hospital each day, or how you just want to hold your baby at night, or how you have run out of money because you are trying to take time to be with your baby each day and work shouldn't be so important. You have your days!! I have learned a lot about myself and a lot about others. I know everyone means well to always ask, "how is the baby doing?", but they never expect a loaded answer or you to REALLY tell them how your baby is doing! I did this once on a bad day and I could tell by the look on the person's face....I shouldn't have said all that! Like she was thinking, "Whoa...I shouldn't have asked!" That was one of my days. But from then on I learned that when someone asks, whether its a good day or a bad day you just say, "Oh she's good, thanks for asking". That always suits people better. They feel comfortable then. They really mean well and people want to be polite. Just be polite back.

I say we survived, because I have no idea how we really made it through this never missing a day at the hospital, raising two young children at home and both of us still working. I can't remember how we made each day work, but that's how it had to be, each day, one at a time. I couldn't even look ahead at the beginning. It was overwhelming and depressing to know she was born in October and we were told she should come home sometime around her due date, which was in January. "There is no way" I thought that we would make it to January. I wanted to die just thinking about it. Somehow we survived. We even made it through a surgery that she didn't have the best reaction to at first. It was heartbreaking! I think I have caught just a small glimpse of what it is like for parents who's child has cancer, a lifetime disability, or another disease. I never understood how those parents survive, but they do. Our ordeal only lasted 3 months in the hospital, so I can't imagine what they must go through, but I have a tad bit more understanding. You don't think you are going to make it, you just HAVE TO, so you DO. You have a choice to make. You can either sulk about it and be constantly depressed and upset (which sometimes you want to do), or you can make the most out of what you've been given and look for the positive. Our baby was ALIVE...positive! She had no major disabilities...positive! She was fighting to survive...positive! We had a great support system..positive! We had everyone we knew and people we didn't know praying for us...positive! There was so much good in the midst of all the bad that we just had to CHOOSE to focus on the good. At times we needed to remind each other of this when one would have a bad day, but these positives really got us through.

We learned to accept the help people were willing to give. We would have never been able to survive without help with the kids, help with meals, help with monry, help through prayer. It is really hard to say yes, but people really do want to just feel like they contibuted, so I learned to let them. When I think about being in there shoes I know I would want to help, so you just accept it and be grateful! I think we have learned the true meaning of gratitude. I don't think we've ever been so grateful in our lives. We will never again take a day for granted. We are grateful for each child, each day, each gift we have been given. Although I would not wish a preemature baby on anyone, just know there is good that comes from it. You WILL survive, you will LEARN, and you will become STRONGER! And.... someday it will all be a memory. Thank you to all who helped us and supported us through this and continue to. We are forever grateful!Joyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15292838755874547845noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4291128828961325555.post-15744980308782252092012-12-28T15:27:00.000-08:002012-12-28T15:27:05.888-08:00Homemade Bailey's....guilty pleasure! Each year I look for some sort of homemade gift to make for clients and co-workers. This year I couldn't pass up the homemade Bailey's recipe I found! I LOVE Bailey's and coffee! It seemed to be a hit and most people were shocked when I told them how easy it was to make.
Here is the recipe.
I was a little concerned about the raw eggs myself, but most of what I read said that anything dangerous is killed off my the alcohol.

HOMEMADE BAILEY'S IRISH CREAM
----------------

3 eggs
1 can sweet condensed milk
1/2 pt. heavy cream
2 tbsp. chocolate syrup
1 tsp. vanilla or almond extract
1/4 c. milk
1/2 to 1 c. irish whiskey (I used Jameson)

Place all ingredients in a blender. Blend for approximately
2 minutes. Pour into a container and chill for about 2 hours
before serving. Must be kept refrigerated. Yields:
approximately 1 1/2 to 2 quarts. Great to serve around the
holidays.

I also packaged this in frapaccino bottles and wrote on the bottle. Turned out so cute!
Yes, Christmas, but also goal setting time! I'm such a dreamer and a planner that I love having my whole year in goals outlined before the year begins. I use these worksheets each year with my clients and ask them to complete them and make 2 copies...one for me and one for them to share with a friend or family member who will hold them accountable! For some reason just sharing your goals with someone else really makes it real and makes you want to follow through. As the year goes it feels great to check things off the list! I love setting goals in all areas of your life, not just fitness or nutrition. Please feel free to share these with your friends!
Merry Christmas!!Joyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15292838755874547845noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4291128828961325555.post-23653947508685151472012-12-05T08:36:00.001-08:002012-12-05T08:36:47.184-08:00I'm almost back!I'm so behind friends! Thanks for being patient. I'm overwhelmed lately with working, kids, the hospital...its crazy! I just want to say, thank you for all the thoughts and prayers. I finally feel confident that Adison will come home and be a healthy baby. Eventually! For now I'm just content that she is growing in the hospital. I'm not pushing the date of her discharge because I know she needs this time to get bigger. You can follow her journey on our caringbridge site. This has really taken my time away from my blog...sorry for those not interested in the baby!
http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/adisonholdmeier

I am slowly getting back to working out. Again...I'm trying to find the time and energy for it, but its really tough! Plus...I'm exhausted and I know I need the rest too. I'm trying to get my milk supply up so I'm pumping every two to three hours and its really hard for me at night!! No crying baby...just an alarm. I know I need rest, so exercise is taking a back seat right now. I got a great workout in last night with my fitcampers and I'm gonna be pretty sore! I felt like my legs might give out going down the steps last night! Wow!

Thanks for your patience. I'll be back at it soon!!!Joyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15292838755874547845noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4291128828961325555.post-28679744856736734032012-11-03T18:30:00.003-07:002012-11-03T18:30:49.554-07:00Preemie AwarenessI read this on a preemie facebook page that I recently found and I really liked it. I guess partly because it made me feel normal that everyone else has these same feelings. Its all so unfamiliar that you sometimes don't know how to handle it all. For me it's just one day at a time and I try not to focus too much on whats really happening. I have no control. It is what it is and now we just have to handle it as it comes. Thanks again for all the support mommas! Soon I'll be back to posting about health and fitness. Right now this seems to be consuming my life!
Prematurity Awareness~ During a normal pregnancy that goes to term, parents have time to work through various stages of planning and anticipation as they prepare for their babe’s arrival. When your baby is born prematurely, that all suddenly changes.

Joy, grief, fear and despair—you experience the range of emotions. The dream of the perfect birth and all of your well-made plans are disrupted. Even if you’ve been confined to bed rest for some concerning complication, even when you know your chances of going “the full 40” are slim, early labor still shocks most women.

With a premature birth comes the realization that you’ll be separated from your baby while he/she’s in the NICU—the neonatal intensive care unit. Returning home to face an empty nursery inspires bouts of inevitable anger, fear, depression and anxiety. For most couples, the earlier the gestational birth, the longer these feelings linger.

Expect to be stressed and short-tempered from lack of sleep. Expect to feel jealous of other parents who have big, bouncy full-term babies. Expect to feel overwhelmed. The process of grieving “what might have been,” and facing the fearful, unknown future for your preemie tests the resolve of even the strongest couples. The good news is so many preemies survive and go on to live normal, healthy lives. I have been overwhelmed with the amount of messages and nice gestures we have recieved!! Its so touching. Thanks for reading our story. I decided to go ahead and start a CaringBridge site for Adison as both a journal to look back on and as a sort of therapy for me. I didn't want to clog up my site with all updates on Adison, so the site will be nice. So many people have asked for updates and I haven't been able to get back with everyone personally, so it will be nice for others to know where to go to get updates. Adison's site is http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/adisonholdmeier/journal
We greatly appreciate all the love and support during this difficult time! Go Fit Mom will be back soon! Starting to feel a lot better although I have to say, I'm not a fan of the c-section!! I know for sure my recoveries with vaginal deliveries were a bit easier than this. It's really hard, as I've said before on bed rest, to take it easy and do a lot of resting! Especially when you have little ones.
If you have suggestions or tips for me I'm all ears. I haven't been able to even do much research and reading on c-sections because I can't use my laptop in Adison's room. It really limits you to books or magazines.
Thanks friends! Joyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15292838755874547845noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4291128828961325555.post-47017965353302876692012-10-22T17:33:00.002-07:002012-10-22T17:33:47.402-07:00Kangarooing I had been hearing about this "kangarooing" thing since a week ago when Adison was born. Before then I had no clue what it was? Kangarooing basically is holding your preemie baby to your bare chest and cuddling them. I've heard there are so many benefits for the baby as well as the parents, including regulating babies HR and helping mother's milk supply.

I found a good article http://www.prematurity.org/baby/kanga-kaia.html
We all know the power of touch and we know the bond between mother and baby. It was the most amazing feeling to get to hold my baby for the 1st time today! It was so emotional yet the best feeling in the whole world. I was also astonished at the amount of milk I pumped immediately after I held her! I have been averaging 15-20 ml with each pumping. No lie, I pumped 40 ml right after holding her!! OMG...I couldn't believe it! I can't wait to hold her tomorrow!
How Preemie Moms Are Chosen~
(Erma Bombeck)

Did you ever wonder how the mothers of premature babies are chosen?
Somehow, I visualize God hovering over Earth, selecting his
instruments for propagation with great care and deliberation. As he
observes, he instructs his angels to take notes in a giant ledger.
"Armstrong, Beth, son. Patron Saint, Matthew.
Forrest, Marjorie, daughter. Patron Saint, Celia.
Rutledge, Carrie, twins. Patron Saint...give her Gerard. He's used to
profanity."
Finally, he passes a name to an angel and smiles.
"Give her a preemie." The angel is curious. "Why this one, God?
She's so happy."
"Exactly," smiles God.
"Could I give a premature baby a mother who knows no laughter? That
would be cruel."
"But does she have the patience?" asks the angel.
"I don't want her to have too much patience, or she'll drown in a sea
of self-pity and despair.
Once the shock and resentment wear off, she'll handle it.
I watched her today. She has that sense of self and independence so
rare and so necessary in a mother.
You see, the child I'm going to give her has a world of its own.
She has to make it live in her world, and that's not going to be easy."
"But Lord, I don't think she even believes in you."
God smiles. "No matter, I can fix that. This one is perfect She has
just the right amount of selfishness."
The angel gasps, "Selfishness?! Is that a virtue?"
God nods. "If she can't separate herself from the child occasionally,
she will never survive.
Yes, here is a woman whom I will bless with a child less than perfect.
She doesn't know it yet, but she is to be envied.
She will never take for granted a spoken word.
She will never consider a step ordinary.
When her child says momma for the first time,
she will be witness to a miracle and know it.
I will permit her to see clearly the things I see--
ignorance, cruelty, prejudice--
and allow her to rise above them.
She will never be alone.
I will be at her side every minute of every day of her life
because she is doing my work as surely as she is here by my side."
"And what about her Patron Saint?" asks the angel, his pen poised in
the air.
God smiles. "A mirror will suffice."

So we had run out of time and to save me and our baby she would be delivered by C-section asap. Before I could even ask they told me they were going to put me to sleep for the surgery! "Thank God" I thought. I just didn't think I could handle anymore. I just wanted to wake up and it all be over. They said they weren't sure how much would go on once they got in there and how much blood I would lose or how many transfusions I would need, so they preferred I was asleep. There was also a good chance they would not be able to save my uterus with such a risky surgery and the amount of bleeding. We told them not to risk my life to save it. If they needed to take it out to make it safer to do it! Since general anesthesia affects the baby they couldn't put me under until the minute they were ready to begin. They prepped me fully awake. It was horrible hearing and seeing all that was happening around me and seeing the amount of doctors and nurses in the room. The NICU team was waiting to take our 26 week old baby and several OB and high risk doctors did the surgery. Jason geared up, but they made him wait in the hallway.
The next thing I know I wake up in the ICU recovery. They told me everything went well and baby was okay. Daddy had gone along with the baby and he got to see her and cut her cord before they took her. I breathed a huge sigh of relief! I woke up! I didn't feel a thing! My baby was alive! We did it! My family came in to visit and I relaxed. I have no idea how long I was there for? I finally got to see my baby as they took me from recovery to a room on the labor and delivery floor. I couldn't see her well because she was in her incubator and I was laying in a bed, but it was amazing just seeing her small body for the first time! I went back to labor and delivery so they could keep a closer eye on me as long as they needed. I got to see my kids for the first time since surgery. My time there is a little blurry. I think I finally got moved to the 6th floor with the rest of the moms at 1:30am. These are the rooms I am used too! A nice suite where I could relax for the next several days. The only thing that would be so different is that I wouldn't get to have my baby in my room for visitors and feedings.
Oh...another strange thing. My mom had been praying to St. Gerard ever since we learned I had this previa issue. St. Gerard is the patron saint of expectant mothers. She called me a few days after completely amazed that Adison was born on the feast day of St. Gerard! Maybe he was protecting me during my delivery??? Hmm...Joyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15292838755874547845noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4291128828961325555.post-92028832420818129162012-10-21T18:23:00.003-07:002012-10-21T18:23:43.567-07:00The Arrival of Adison: Part 3 "Out of Time"I've made it to Monday morning. Our next goal...12 more hours. At this point every day, every 12 hours she stays inside is giving her a better chance to survive. They are still saying my baby is 25 weeks and I'm still trying to tell them I am 26 weeks. I know the date of my last period, the date of conception, I know she is 26 weeks, but because of measurements at my 20 week ultrasound they pushed my due date back and are calling her 25 weeks and 5 days today. "Whatever"....if thats what they want to say, it won't make much difference. If anything she could be a bit ahead of what they are saying and that will be a good thing.

Today my mom comes to sit with me. I don't think she even realized how serious this was getting until she saw me. Everyone just thinks I'm on bed rest, but there is no way I'm having this baby now.
Monday was fairly uneventful. I now have a bedside toilet so I don't go too far and since I am so nauseated with the mag that I can barely sit straight up or stand for that matter. The bleeding shows when I urinate and we know it is still happening. They didn't even check my cervix or do any further exams to know that I was actively bleeding. It was showing on my pad and in the urine. It was concerning enough I guess for them to run blood test after blood test. This is when they see that there is an issue in my blood. It is not clotting like it should, so the bleeding is not stopping. A big problem! This was concerning enough that they started talking about delivering.

We met with a NICU doctor late Monday evening. I really didn't know if I wanted to meet with them. I didn't know if I wanted to hear what they had to say. Were they going to give me a statistic or tell me my baby might not live??? I wasn't sure I could hear this. The meeting happened anyway. I really couldn't ask questions. I just cried. The doctor was very very nice and he just did all the talking. He explained what steps they take from the delivery room and in the first hours for babies this young. He said they would have everything ready. He told us they have babies in the NICU born as young as 23 weeks. He explained that 25 (I'm still thinking 26) weeks is not ideal, but babies can be just fine. The first 5-7 days is the most critical. He went through a number of things that could happen and the long term health issues or disabilities that can develop. I can't even talk about them still right now. I can't let myself think about them! It was the worst meeting I've ever sat through.
My goal Monday night is again to make it to 6am. This one I just set for myself. Tonight they thought it was best if Jason stayed in case they would need to deliver in an emergency. They said they would have me ready in 5 minutes if they needed to and even if it weren't an emergency they would be ready for surgery within 20 minutes. Too much time for him to get there! They had left the labor and delivery bed in my room after getting me a real bed so he at least had that. Again tonight I'm praying and watching the clock all night waiting for 6am!

I made it again! I made it to 6am Tuesday and then I thought well...I made it this far I'll keep sleeping until I have to get up. I'm baking this baby as long as possible. Exerting as little energy as possible on anything. I haven't eaten a real meal since Sunday morning and I didn't care. The only thing was the thirst! I was so damn thirsty. They told me I would be, but not to drink alot. Mostly it was ice chips and maybe a little sprite. "Cottonmouth" terrible! At 7:00am Jason kissed me and said he was running home to help my mom get the kids to school. It wasn't an hour later that I'm calling him back in a sob to tell him, "come back, they are going to deliver her now".

I can't remember exactly, but I had had blood draws every 4 hours or so and it was telling them that I was bleeding into the uterus and even whatever they were giving me to make it stop wasn't working because my blood wasn't clotting. I think they ordered a transfusion before the decision to deliver, but I can't remember? I was receiving some sort of hemoglobin or plasma that was going to help the clotting. It didn't look like blood. It was brownish and it was cold! It came from the blood bank frozen and they thaw it and put it in. I am pretty sure it was after this transfusion that they found this wasn't working and my blood was just taking this and eating it up, but not doing what it was suppose to? I had something called DIC. Its easier to give a link to it then try to explain it. After looking this up I understand why my family and friends were all thinking I would die. the look in my sister, aunts and mom's faces were scary. Of course I didn't know what I had besides what they told me. http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/disseminated-intravascular-coagulation-dic-topic-overview

A doctor I had never seen came in and sat by my bed. He explained what was happening with the blood and explained that my life was in danger at this point and that we couldn't wait any longer. We will have to get the baby delivered very shortly. He was gentle and sincere. I was a mess. He said they would aim to do it at 9am after a couple more transfusions and some prep. My doctor came in shortly after and said he would be in the surgery as well as the high risk doctors. There were 2 anastegiologists that helped with prep and a third doctor of some sort (not sure what part he played). My nurses got several more types of blood ready and other type of IV bags. I swear they pumped about 6 bags of stuff into me before surgery! Jason was there and my mom and sister were let into the room while they were doing this too. I got really anxious and started to freak out a little. I had at least 8 sets of eyes on me like I wasn't even there, just watching. I asked everyone to leave. I just wanted it all to be over. The only relieving part of the whole prep was the anastegiologists telling me that they were going to put me all the way under for the surgery instead of an epidural. Thank god! I had way too many needles and can't even think of epidurals until I'm in severe pain, plus I had just went through so much I wasn't sure I could handle the sights and sounds of the surgery. I just wanted to wake up and it be all over!Joyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15292838755874547845noreply@blogger.com0
